Penile Implants

Implants are called as prosthesis. These may be malleable or inflatable. In its simplest form it consists of a pair of malleable rods surgically implanted within the erection chambers of the penis. As a result of which the penis is always semi-rigid. The penis merely needs to be lifted or adjusted into the erect position to initiate sex. These days mostly hydraulic and inflatable prosthesis are used widely, which allows a man to have an erection whenever he chooses. It is more natural and easy to conceal as well. Often, a penile prosthesis is implanted during surgery to reconstruct the penis and its blood vessels when scarring has caused erections to curve.

The inflatable penile implant prosthesis consists of two attached cylinders which are placed surgically in the body. The two cylinders are basically a reservoir and a pump. These are inserted in the penis and connected to a separate reservoir of fluid by tubing. Obviously, the reservoir is implanted under the groin muscles. The pump sits under the loose skin of the scrotal sac, between the testicles. This is called a 3-piece inflatable penile implant. On the other hand, a 2-piece inflatable penile prosthesis consists of two components only, the attached cylinders and the combined reservoir and pump unit. The reservoir is combined with the pump into one housing unit that fits comfortably within the scrotum. Here the surgery is shorter and less complicated and there are no parts anywhere else in the abdomen. Smaller reservoirs in 2-piece implants may have the disadvantage that they not result in adequate erections in some men. The pump is pressed which inflates the prosthesis. The fluid from the reservoir is transferred to the penis cylinders by the pump. These cylinders are inflated thereby causing an erection a deflation valve at the base of the pump is pressed to deflate it and return to the normal state.

After prosthesis surgery a small surgical scar may be present where the bottom of the penis meets the scrotal sac. Apart from that it is invisible to the outside. The process is similar to a natural erection though the shortcoming is that rate the erection as shorter than the normal erection. It has no effect on ejaculation. Upon removal of the implant, the man may never again have natural erections.
